Displays of art and athletic achievements will soon have new homes on the campus of Pratt Community College.
A new Riney Art Gallery is nearly complete in the Riney Student Center after moving out of its long time home in the Benson Education Center.
Grand opening for the new art gallery is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the gallery. The first display will be an exhibit of Stan Reimer photos.
The former art gallery will become the new home for the PCC Athletic Hall of Fame.
The new art gallery is located room 310 in the Riney Student Center. In the past that room has been used as a student lounge, a classroom and a meeting room.
New walls have been added to the room to increase the display area. The layout will allow for more than one exhibit at a time, said PCC President William Wojciechowski.
The new walls are covered with sisal, a natural hemp from Brazil that is naturally fire proof and self healing so it will not show nail holes, said Dan Petz, PCC director of facilities.
Besides the new walls, the exterior windows have been tinted, new lighting and ceiling tiles have been added, Petz said.
The new facility will provide improvements over the former area allowing for more than one exhibit at a time as well as provide a place for special occasions and luncheons.
“It will be an improved gallery,” Wojciechowski said.
The gallery will be home faculty and student exhibits as well as prominent regional artists in various mediums including ceramic, painting and photography.
The gallery will be open during the regular business day as well s during various functions like college plays, college and community concerts and any activity that will draw the public to the college.
A couple of weeks after the dedication of the new art gallery the new Athletic Hall of Fame will be open to the public in conjunction with the last home PCC basketball game against Colby Community College that is also homecoming.
The dedication will start at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at the Hall of Fame room, the former art gallery in the Benson Education Center.
At the dedication, 21 past athletes will become the first members, some posthumously, of the PCC Athletic Hall of Fame. Many of those athletes will be on hand for the dedication ceremony, Wojciechowski said.
The induction will be in the afternoon then the inductees will be presented to the audience at the half time of the men’s basketball game that night.
The Hall of Fame will feature trophies from the past including sports no longer played at PCC, along with photos and other memorabilia that reveal significant highlights of past student athletes.
The Hall of Fame will help make people aware of PCCs athletic history and help them reminisce about her past.
“It will provide an opportunity to view some of the accomplishments of the athletic program throughout the year,” Wojciechowski said.
The new art gallery and new hall of fame are part of the preparations for the 75-year anniversary celebration in 2013, Wojciechowski said.
