The first day of 2019 has arrived. Many will be making New Year's resolutions: perhaps a commitment to eat healthier, exercise more, lose weight, or just to be a better person. There are many reasons to love the New Year, this season of starting over, of out with the old and in with the new. Here are my six reasons:
1) First day hike. The Parks division of Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism has been sponsoring a First Day Hike at various state parks since 2012. Locally, that hike happens at the Green Recreation Trail. When we finished our hike today, 80 persons had already completed theirs, with 100 expected before the event ended. It's a great idea and a great way to begin the year.
2) First day bike. When we saw Nelson Garcia pedaling down Country Club following our first day hike, my wife and I were inspired to do a first day bike ride. So, we rode to Iuka and back. The best part of the ride was the six horse salute a mile or so south of Iuka. Six horses lined up, fairly evenly spaced apart, and watched us as we passed. Yes, our feet were very cold by the end of the ride, even with our wool socks and Neoprene shoe covers.
3) Waking up without a hangover. It was great to wake up today with a clear head. I didn't have any alcohol on New Year's Eve, and I also didn't have any regrets from the night before.
4) Calling friends and family and wishing them a Happy New Year. It's always fun to wish someone well, whether in English, Czech, or another language. Stastny novy rok.
5) A day off. As with Christmas, most of the Western world gets the day off. So Wednesday will seem like a Monday, and, before you know it, it will be Friday.
6) 2019 is a tabula rasa. What's done is done for 2018. 2019 awaits you with a fresh page to be filled with your hopes, dreams, struggles and victories. How will you write your story this year?
