Scripture:  Genesis (NIV) 35:16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, “Don't be afraid, for you have another son.” 18 As she breathed her last"for she was dying"she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

Observation:   Rachel had so longed for children.   Her first born she named Joseph (Jehovah has added) and her confession was that God would add to her another son.   She had difficulty in childbirth and died shortly after giving birth to her second son.   In dying she named him Ben-Oni (son of my sorrow).   But Jacob, the father, would not have the son of the woman he loved going through life being a reminder of his mother's death.     He cancelled Rachel's name and gave him the strong name 'Benjamin' (son of the right hand).

Application:  What a picture of how God treats us.   The world has many degrading names to identify us: failure, looser, Mr. No-good.   Sometimes even loving parents will use words or phrases that are degrading.

When Jesus forgives us and comes to live in our lives, we gain a Heavenly Father that is better than Jacob.   He calls us His children!   We are His sons and daughters!     We are 'Benjamins!' We are children brought into His family by the One on His right hand!

Prayer:   Heavenly Father, when you look at Jesus and see His scars, I know you are reminded of how much he paid for my place in Your family!   Because of Him, I am your child.   I am your servant.  Know that I count it a great privilege to be a part of your family!   May my love and devotion be easily seen!      Amen
