Over the weekend, I visited with three friends, all of whom were waiting and waiting upon a government that just doesn't seem to work anymore. All three are public servants who have performed their jobs diligently for years. However, that doesn't seem to matter to those in power, who would rather use federal employees as pawns in a political game that has no real winners and plenty of losers, like you and me, the American people.
What does it mean to serve your country, whether in a military or civilian capacity? It means that you show up for your job every day and perform your duty for the good of America, in whatever capacity that might be. That is, you do so until there is a lapse in funding, which means that the President, Congress, and Senate basically can't get their act together.
31 days and counting. With each passing day of the government shutdown, the American people are paying more in tax dollars than if the government had simply been left open in the first place. The costs of the shutdown, including such things as back pay for those who have been furloughed, restarting impacted agencies, and lost revenue for American businesses, will far exceed the cost of having uninterrupted government services (see https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2019/jan/18/how-much-does-government-shutdown-cost/).
It's time to put our government back to work. It's time to hold our elected officials accountable. If you are tired of politics as usual, then call our President, US Senators and members of Congress to let them know what you think. Here are the numbers:
President Donald Trump: 202-456-1111.
US Representative Ron Estes: (202) 225-6216 or (316) 262-8992.
US Senator Jerry Moran: (202) 224-6521; (316) 631-1410; or, (785) 628-6401.
US Senator Pat Roberts: (202) 224-4774; (316) 263-0416; 620) 227-2244; (785) 295-2745; or, (913) 451-9343.
There is a human cost to this government shutdown, as my three friends and hundreds of thousands of others are realizing. Let's demand from our elected representatives that they do their jobs and end the absurdity.
