March 02, 2019: SOAP #3376:   Numbers 30-31; Mark 9

Scripture:  Mark (NIV) 9:35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Observation:   When Jesus taught the care of the Father, He pointed his hearer's attention to the birds of the air and the flowers of the field.   'Consider the lilies of the field.' (Matthew 6:26-28)    But Jesus did not just tell us to consider the little children.   He brought a child into their presence.   He took the child in His arms.

By His actions, I think Jesus was saying that we learn best from children, not by observing them from a distance, but by being involved with them.   We learn by being involved up close.

Application:  One thing I like about driving the school bus is that there is only one entrance/exit (not considering the emergency exit in the back).   I almost rub shoulders with each student as they enter and exit the bus.   I can see the color of their eyes and the expressions on their face.  According to the verses above, I welcome Jesus every time I welcome a child onto the bus.   And I welcome the One Who sent Jesus.   Often there is opportunity to be involved 'up close' at least for a few minutes twice each school day.

Prayer:   Holy Spirit, thank you for the special blessing you have given me"the blessing of serving children.   Help me to see you in each child I serve.   Remind me of the value of welcoming each child.   As I welcome them onto my bus, may they experience the joy and peace of Your presence. Amen
