Judith Gail Johnson (Bales) Nixon, age 69, passed away at her home in Barber County, Thursday morning, April 11, 2013.

Judy was born July 4, 1943, to Dale and Georgia Mae Johnson of Pratt. Judy graduated from Pratt High School in 1963 and earned her bachelor's degree in English from Emporia State University.

Judy was married to Roger Bales of Pratt from 1966 to 2000. She married Jim Nixon of Barber County in 2004.

Judy's love for animals became evident at an early age, when as a child she brought home wounded and stray animals home to provide them shelter, food and nurturing. During her retirement, Judy volunteered much of time and efforts to the Pratt Humane society and served as president of the shelter for several years.

In adulthood, Judy shared her compassion, love and experience to the benefit of her immediate and extended family everyday. Judy excelled in her role as a mother, helping all of her children through college and into adulthood. Judy reveled in her life as a grandmother.

Judy's career as a social worker for the State of Kansas earned her a reputation for helping abused and neglected children and at risk families. Judy retired in 2003 as a state supervisor and then began fully dedicating her time and efforts towards helping others in need. Whether acting as a professional mediator, volunteering in the community or fund raising for the local animal shelter, Judy always gave her benefactors 100 percent of her time and attention. Judy always gave of herself gladly.

A master wordsmith, Judy's command of the English language garnered her many 'wins' with crosswords and playing Scrabble with the family at home around the kitchen table or more recently with her friends on-line. Judy loved words, animals, gardening, helping others and dearly loved her family.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents and beloved son Christopher Bales.

Judy is survived by former husband Roger Bales of Abilene; their three children, son Joel Bales of Abilene, daughters Sara Bales (Rob Gatton) of Portland, Ore., and Katie (Bill) Allen of Abilene; two grandchildren, Fisher and Lila Allen.
