Douglas “Doug” P. Smith, 72, of Salina, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Salina Regional Health Center. On March 6, 1942 he was born in Pratt to Herbert and Esther (Langley) Smith.
Doug graduated from Pratt High School, McPherson College and Wichita State University where he received his master’s degree.
He married June Phelps in October of 1961. Together they had three daughters. On Jan. 14, 1984 he married Sandy Otto.
Doug was an elder of the Belmont Boulevard Christian Church and served on multiple committees. He had a passion for golfing, hiking, softball, snow and water skiing. He had been an associate professor of criminal justice at Bethany College since 2005. Before that, he had been an adjunct professor since 1978. He had 32 years with the 28th Judicial District as a court service officer, chief of court service officer, and court administrator.
Survivors include his wife Sandy, of the home; three daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” and husband Dave Stewart Jr. of Lubbock, Texas, Cindy and husband Brian MacDonald of Salina, and Melissa and husband William Lewis Jr. of Lenexa; grandchildren, Robert (Bridget) Davis, Caleb (MaryBeth) Davis, Jayson and Joscelyn Cuba; and six great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, 2508 Belmont Blvd., Salina.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Belmont Blvd. Christian Church. Family will be present 5-7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Belmont Blvd. Christian Church or Bethany College and are in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 North Eighth Street, Salina, KS 67401.
