Richard L. Ebersole, 85, longtime Embalmer / Funeral Director and owner of Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs, died Friday, March 24, 2017 in Spring View Manor, Conway Springs, KS where he had been a resident since December 29, 2016.
Richard was born Nov. 17, 1931 to John Olin Ebersole and Mildred (Cline) Ebersole. He grew up in Conway Springs and attended Conway Springs public schools. He graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1950. Richard continued his education at Phillips University; Kansas University, and later graduated from Wichita University in 1954.
Richard was united in marriage to Wilda Jean (Netherton) Flickinger on August 1, 1954 at the First Christian Church, in Conway Springs. They made their home in Bern, Kansas from 1954 to 1956 where he taught Social Science and Science at the Bern High School. Their son Jack Lee was born in July of 1955. In 1956, they moved to Dallas, Texas where Richard attended and graduated valedictorian from the Dallas Institute of Gupton Jones Mortuary School. The family moved to Hutchinson, KS in 1957 where Richard served his apprenticeship at the Elliott Funeral Home. They returned to Dallas in 1958 and Richard returned to the school, this time as a member of the faculty at Dallas Institute. As an instructor, Richard taught Microbiology, Pathology and Public Health while also continuing his education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Richard returned to Conway Springs to the family mortuary business in 1960. They built their new brick home in 1961 and their second son Brent Layne was born in September of that year.
Richard purchased the Mortuary and continued to offer sincere and dedicated service to the Conway Springs community and surrounding area towns for the next 57 years. Jean died on December 1, 2010.
Richard was a member of the First Christian Church, Conway Springs where he was baptized on February 27, 1939 and later served as an Elder. He was a past Chairman of the Board of Directors and a Church Trustee. Richard was a 50 year member and had served as Master of Mistletoe Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M. in 1965. He was also a member of Chapter No. 94, Royal Arch Masons, Conway Springs, the Wichita Consistory, the Wichita Midian Temple and the Conway Springs Lions Club. Richard was a past president and actively involved in the Conway Springs Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Richard was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jack Cline Ebersole.
He survived by two sons: Jack Ebersole and wife Kathy of Pratt, Kansas; Brent Ebersole and wife Daria of Conway Springs, Kansas; four grandchildren: Khristina Kirstatter of Lawrence, Kansas; Dr. Justin Ebersole and wife Sadie of Parsons, Kansas; Trista Boyd and husband Chase, Trenton Ebersole and fiancé Holly Hottinger all of Wichita, Kansas; three great-grandchildren: Madeleine Stegman, Ace and Asher Ebersole and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs with Rev. Rodney Peters, officiating. Masonic Graveside Rites were by Mistletoe Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., Conway Springs, KS. Interment was in Conway Springs Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs.
