Melvin LeRoy Cunningham, 84, entered into heaven December 19, 2017 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge, Kansas.

Melvin was born April 6, 1933 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Agnes and Merle Cunningham. He was united in marriage to Shirley J. Fitzsimmons on January 21, 1951 in Medicine Lodge. They were blessed with four children: Jim, Rodney, Susan, and Cindy.

He lived in the Isabel/Medicine Lodge area most of his life before Shirley and he purchased a farm west of town where they lived and raised their children.

Melvin was employed by Lodge Chevrolet for 18 years. His true passion was farming and he was able to farm his entire adult life.

Melvin was active in his church and served on the Sawyer Coop board, Farmers Home Administration board, and on the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital board for many years.

Melvin loved being active in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. He and Shirley attended numerous school activities and sporting events throughout the years. Spending time with family and friends were the highlights of his days.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley. He is survived by two sons: Jim of Pratt, and Rodney and Karen of Medicine Lodge, two daughters: Susan and Jim Whitehead of Midland, TX, and Cindy and John Ford of Wichita, KS, six grandchildren: Amanda and David Williams, Erica and Justin Dipman, Ryan and Karen Cunningham, Julie and Ryan McCoy, Christi and Brian Bullock, and Landon and Andrea Cunningham, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 21 from Noon to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E Lincoln in Medicine Lodge, KS. Services will be Friday, December 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, KS, with Pastor Jim Godbey, Pastor Paul Stevens, and Pastor Dwain Richert officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, KS.

The family has requested memorials be made to the Melvin Cunningham Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be left at
