CUNNINGHAM — Mona Viola Steffen, 88, died July 17, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas.

The daughter of Erwin and Viola Franks Wilcox, she was born March 16, 1930, at her parents’ farm in rural Pratt County near Cairo, Kansas.  She attended Cairo and Cunningham schools, moving to Cunningham in 1935 and graduating from Cunningham High School in 1947.

Mona married Edwin A. Steffen at her parents’ home in Cunningham on October 9, 1947. Ed and Mona farmed in the Cunningham community and recently celebrated 52 years in their farm home. Mona enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, cooking, traveling with her husband, and visiting with family and friends. She refinished furniture and had a story to tell about each piece. Mona made a dozen photo albums for each of her children, each album complete with family trees and history. Working side by side, Mona and Ed restored and maintained two old farm homes.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Nashville, Kansas, where she enjoyed worship services and visiting with her church family every week.

Mona is survived by her husband, Ed; children: Mark, David and his wife Kerri, Suzanne and her husband Mark Stillwell, and John and his wife Vicki; grandchildren: Heidi and her husband Steve McKennon, Amy and her husband Sean Slattery, Jay and his wife Corrie Steffen, Emilie and her husband Alex Smith, Andrew and his wife Ashlynn Stillwell, Laurie and her husband Chris McLouth, Allison Steffen, and Ellie and her husband Robert Simms; step-grandchildren: Kim and her husband Jason Ghumm, Erin and her husband Frank Strohl, Chris Huffman, and Chad and his wife Lea Anne Huffman; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins; and a community of friends.

Mona made each child in her life feel loved and there was always room in her heart for one more.  When she retired as a medical aide at Hilltop Manor, Mona promised her friend and co-worker Julie Huhman that she would babysit her next child. Sixteen years ago Mona gained another grandchild and gave Macy an extra grandma to love.
