Both Pratt High School boys and girls cross country teams will compete at the state meet in Wamego after placing third overall at the regional meet in Buhler.
The PHS cross country team is taking both the boys and girls’ teams to state this year after finishing in the top 3 at regionals on Saturday.
The girls had three runners medal. Addie Hoeme won 3rd, Sian Helfrich placed 4th, and Mackenzie Shanline got 7th. As a team they placed 3rd which means the entire team, including Shawndra Bare, Casey James, and Makayla Decker, qualified for state. The girls were only 8 points away from 4th so every position counted.
“The girls competed hard,” said head coach Kathy Hitz, “Shawndra Bare has been struggling with some issues with a hip and she fought through it for her team.”
Greenback cross country has not had a full girls team since 2016 and have not qualified a girls team since 2012.
The boys team also had three medalists. Nate Kolm placed 7th, Sergio Adame got 9th, and Raul Orozco earned 10th. The rest of the team followed in order: Riley Decker, Cody James, Carlos Rodriguez, and Hogan Thompson. The boys’ placed 2nd and got to take home a runner-up trophy.
“We finished ahead of third place Ulysses by 9 points. It takes all of them to get this accomplished but Sergio and Riley both had exceptional races,” said Hitz. “Sergio has been strong after coming back from a concussion early in the season and has contributed a lot to the team.
“I am proud of the grit and determination I am seeing in my runners. They never give up!”
