Local Boy Scout Troop 201 Scoutmaster Dave Schmidt was recognized recently at a monthly district meeting for Scouts with the Kanza District Award of Merit. The award itself is a peer nominated and elected recognition for outstanding service to youth in the community through Scouts and good citizenship to their town.
"I felt very humbled and honored to receive this award,” Schmidt said. “I couldn't do it without the many parents and volunteers who have helped young men in the Scouting Program over the years."
Kanza District consists of Pratt, Medicine Lodge, Greensburg, Kinsley, Lewis,  Great Bend, Stafford, St. John,  Larned,  Hoisington, and Ellinwood.
Schmidt,  who is the business manager for Skyline Schools in Pratt has been involved in Scouts since his childhood. As a young man he earned the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle rank. As an adult he has volunteered as a Scout leader for 20-plus years.  The only time he wasn't fully able to help with Scouts was during his tenure in the United States Army.
Schmidt also serves on various boards and committees in the community,  and coaches youth sports.  It is this involvement and dedication to helping people that earned him this award amongst Scout Leaders.
