Donnenwerth takes third.
On Monday, April 29 Pratt hosted the Central Kansas League boys tennis tournament and three of the four Pratt High competitors placed in the top four.
Caden Donnenwerth, a senior, went into the tournament seeded at #4 for #1 singles. He beat the #5 seed from Haven in two sets but fell to Hesston. He was able to come back and avenge a loss from earlier in the season to Penka from Larned, winning 6-2 and 6-1. He went 2-1 to take third place.
Unfortunately, the #2 singles player, Micah Tatro, had a rough start, drawing the last seed and losing his first match to the #1 seed in his bracket.
“Micah Tatro drew the last seed, but had he not, I believe he would have been in the top four as well,” said head coach Tate Thompson.
Tatro went on to win his next two games, but was only able to earn fifth after losing in his first round.
Moving on to the doubles teams, Rafe Donnenwerth and Chase Folkers went into the tournament as the #5 in #1 doubles. They went 1-2 at the tournament to get fourth place. The #2 doubles team, Luis Garcia-Jimenez and Hogan Thompson started as the #3 seed and placed fourth at League as well.
“The doubles teams did some really good things, but still need to shore up some basic strategy and stay strong mentally as the day wears on,” said Thompson.
The boys compete again this Friday at their regionals in Buhler.
“The boys did well overall. We will have some tough matchups on Friday, but we hope to get some kids qualified. It has been a while since that happened.”
