The Skyline Lady Thunderbirds softball team has had the typical struggles of a team that is in the first season of a new program. That didn’t stop the ladies from working hard for months.
All of that hard work was on full display for the first victory of the season - and the program - on Friday, May 10 against the Lady Panthers of Wichita Independent School.
It was a close game after the first inning, with the T-Birds up just one run, 3-2 over Wichita Independent. SHS would put up one run in the second inning before erupting for 13 runs in the third inning.
Five Lady T-Bird recorded hits, with Lauffer leading the way with two. Seven ladies recorded RBI’s, with Lauffer once again leading the pack with 3, and Meiklejohn with 2. Meiklejohn pitched 3 innings, allowing 2 runs while striking out three batters.
“We battled with Wichita Independent earlier in the season with a couple long games losing 29-30 and 26-28.  I think it was good for the girls to see how much they have improved.  They came out and took care of business, finishing the first game in 3 innings by run rule.  Just the comparison in those two games of how much better we had gotten defensively and with the little aspects that make a big difference, like our base running.  I was proud of the girls the way they came out to compete,” said Coach Lori Anschutz on the progress her team had made.
The Lady T-Birds hope to carry this momentum into the regional tournament May 13-15.
