On January 28, 2019, around 10:30 p.m., Tony Diaz was riding his bicycle home after finishing work at Channel 7 Fox News in Austin, Tx. He was struck and killed by a City Bus. So ended the life of a very special young man.
Anthony John Diaz was born December 8, 1979, in San Diego, CA. to Nancy (Humphrey) Diaz and John Diaz. Also welcoming him was his older sister Kelly. John and Nancy divorced when Tony was still very young. His dad was no longer a part of his life.
In 1992, Tony was living with his mother and sister in Pratt, KS. On December 26, 1992, Tony came to live with the Larry Hamm family in St. John., KS. He was in 7th grade.
Tony continued to live with the Hamms and graduated from St. John High School in 1998. He attended on year at York College, York, NE, and a semester at Garden City Community College, Garden City, KS., before joining the Navy in May, 2000. Tony's job in the Navy was Journalism and Broadcast Communications. His main reason for joining the Navy was "I wanted to serve my country."
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Tony moved to Austin, TX., to continue his education. He took classes at the University of Texas and Austin Community College. He loved film-making and collaborated with classmates in creating a documentary, and also created a short five minute film that was shown in a local movie theater there in Austin. He was then hired by Fox News TV 7 in Austin where he was working at the time of his death.
Tony was very health-conscious. He stayed physically fit by bicycling and running. He ran a 10 mile marathon one summer in the Austin heat. Tony built his own bicycle from scratch, enjoyed cooking and creating his own healthy meals, enjoyed video games.
Tony is survived by his sister Kelly Diaz, Emporia, KS; his aunt, Sandra Riley, Austin, TX; an uncle, Ron Humphrey, Flagstaff, AZ., and four cousins.
Tony is also survived by his foster family, Larry and Linda Hamm, Pratt, KS; foster siblings: Lane (Kim) Hamm, St Louis, MO; Darin (Stacy) Hamm, Hotchkiss, CO; Ryan Hamm, Dallas, TX; Lara (Hamm) Rogers, Lubbock, TX; Robert Gardner, Hutchinson, KS; Dixie (Patrick) Vreeken, Reno, NV, plus numerous other family and friends.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Humphrey and John Diaz, maternal grandparents, and his foster grandmothers: Enid Brown and Helen Hamm.
A Memorial Remembrance will be held May 25, 7p.m., at the Larry Hamm residence: 80021 SE 40th St; Pratt, KS. If you have a memory to share regarding Tony, please have it typed and bring or mail to them.
