James William Hickey, 65, of Cameron, Missouri, died Monday, July 8, 2019. The memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt, Kansas. Visitation with the family will follow the service. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Jim was born on March 28, 1954 in Pratt, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Peggy Rose Hickey and Joseph Sevier Hickey; brothers, Michael Patrick Hickey, Joseph Nelson Hickey, and William Sevier Hickey and nephew Gus Rau Meyer, Jr.
Following graduation from Skyline High School, Jim served four-years in the U.S. Marine Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant. While Jim was stationed in Japan he trained in martial arts and received a black belt certification.
Jim is survived by his son, Ben Hickey; sisters, Susan (Paul) Lindahl, Cheryl (Gus) Meyer; nephews, Nels (Joni Jorgensen) Lindahl, (great nephew John Paul; great niece Kaylee Rose), Jason Meyer; niece, Jenifer (Matt) Lindahl Boles, (great nieces, Kay and Clara); step-mother, Beverly Hickey Appelhans; and many cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
Jim grew up in a family of sports enthusiasts, including golf, basketball and baseball. He was a lifelong Yankees fan and was thrilled to recently receive a birthday phone call from former NY Yankees pitcher, Ralph Terry. While growing up, he enjoyed hunting quail and pheasant with family and friends. Jim graduated from Kansas Newman University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science. After receiving his teaching certificate he taught High School English, Yearbook Advisor, Assistant Golf and Basketball Coach. Jim later moved to Hutchinson and became an English Professor at Hutchinson Community College.
