KBI makes arrest in death of 1-year-old Ulysses child
STEVENS COUNTY — The young father of a 13-month-old Ulysses boy who died from brain injuries in October 2017 was arrested Thursday in connection with the child’s death.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrested Jayden S. Silva, 18, at his home at 511 W. 8th St., in Hugoton, on suspicion of first-degree felony murder, and abuse of a child. The charges were filed in juvenile court because Silva was a juvenile when the death occurred.
Grant County Attorney Jessica E. Akers declined to speak to The Hutchinson News, so it's unknown if there is an intent to seek to certify Silva as an adult for prosecution.
The arrest followed a lengthy investigation by the KBI and the Ulysses Police Department into the death of Jaxon Silva.
The Ulysses Police Department responded to a call on an unresponsive toddler at 819 N. Stever in Ulysses the late morning for Oct. 2, 2017. The child was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Ulysses and then flown to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was declared brain dead as a result of his injuries on Oct. 6.
Silva was booked into the Grant County Jail. The Grant County Attorney will prosecute the case.
