OTTAWA — A 19-6 first quarter was too much for the Bethel College women’s basketball team to overcome in a 66-49 loss to previously winless Ottawa University Monday night in KCAC play in Ottawa.

Bethel trailed 35-18 at the half and stayed even with the Braves in the second half.

Avery Lewman led 1-7 Ottawa with 14 points, followed by Madi McAvory with 13 points and Liz Vaughn with 10.

Lindey Heim led Bethel with 13 points off the bench. Abby Schmidt added 10 points with nine rebounds.

Bethel was just 16 of 49 from the field for 33 percent, while Ottawa was 18 of 57 for 32 percent. Bethel was outscored 18-6 from 3-point range. Bethel also was outscored 24-15 from the line.

Ottawa is 1-4 in conference play.

Bethel drops to 6-4, 3-2 in KCAC play, and plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Kansas Wesleyan. Despite the loss, Bethel is tied for third in the conference, just one game out of second place.

OTTAWA — The Bethel College men’s basketball team cut a 20-point halftime deficit to three before falling to Ottawa University 86-81 Monday night in KCAC play in Ottawa.

The loss was Bethel’s first in conference play, falling to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Ottawa is 9-1, 4-1 in conference play.

Ottawa is ranked 12th in the NAIA Division II poll, while Bethel is 22nd.

The Threshers trailed by as many as 21 in the first half and trailed 48-28 at intermission.

Down by 21 with 13:34 to play, Bethel got within three with 26 seconds to play on a Garrett White four-point play. The Braves hit a pair of free throws in the remaining time.

Darryl Bowie led Ottawa with 24 points. Kyle Patrick and Ryan Haskins each added 11 points. Jaquan Daniels scored 10. Jackson Mallory had 12 rebounds.

Garrett White led Bethel with 24 points. Jaylon Scott scored 19 points with 17 rebounds. Clifford Byrd II scored 11 points.

Bethel plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at Kansas Wesleyan, 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference after an 84-64 loss to Avila.

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s basketball team downed the Ottawa University junior varsity 78-66 Saturday at Yost Center in Hesston.

The Larks trailed 29-28 at the half.

Marcus Hill led Hesston with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Jacob Baker added 21 points.

Ottawa’s scoring wasn’t reported.

The win was Hesston’s fourth straight, improving to 7-5.

Hesston’s game against the Bethel JV has been postponed. Hesston will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against the Central Christian junior varsity.

COLBY — The Hesston College women’s basketball team fell to Colby Community College 85-45 Monday night in Colby.

Hesston trailed 38-20 at the half.

Kiara Knight led 9-1 Colby with 12 points. Imari Grayson, Brittanie Brickhouse and Alize Ruiz each added 10 points.

Sydney Bontrager led Hesston with eight points.

The Larks are 1-13 and hosts the McPherson junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. today.
