Leroy Gier
KINSLEY - Leroy Clifford Gier was born April 28, 1935. He died July 30, 2017, at his home.
A man of distinction, Leroy is known to his friends and family in many different ways. He was Mayor, Chief of Police, Postmaster and Chief Engineer of the town of Nettleton, Kansas. He was a well known and successful farmer and stockman throughout Central Kansas. Leroy was distinguished during his service in Germany in the US Army from 1956 through 1958 as an MP, and was awarded commendations as expert in rocket launcher, pistol and rifle. As a veteran, he was Commander of VFW Post 7349 from 1991 - 1993. One of his best friends, Kenny Lonberger, described him as 'the hardest working man I've ever known'. Leroy also enjoyed some of the finer things in life, including being a fan of the KC Royals, playing dominos and cards, as well as fishing and socializing with family and friends.
Sylvan Grove, Kansas, was his place of birth and he attended school there at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He worked on and eventually purchased a portion of the family's farm near Sylvan Grove. In 1980 Leroy moved to the Kinsley, Kansas, area where he continued his farming career until his recent passing.
Leroy's family includes: six children, Debra Lynn (deceased 1955), Dale Gier and wife Alba of Salina, Kansas, Steve Gier and wife Vicky of Rose Hill, Kansas, Tammy Barr and husband Steve of Houston, Texas, Karma Penner of Russell, Kansas, and Shani Bricker and husband Chris of Cushing, Oklahoma. The family also includes: ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His parents were Robert Conrad Gier, Sr. and Sophia Becker Gier. Leroy was the youngest of his six siblings, including brothers, Robert, Harvey and Delmer, and sisters, Dolores Serrien, Elvera Fischer and Kathleen Buttenhoff, all deceased.
Leroy Gier will certainly be missed by his family and friends, all of whom should find solace knowing he's in his new home with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
