PHS wrestling took 4th on Saturday at the Maize tournament.

The Greenback wrestlers went into their first meet back with the goals of placing in the top three and showing progress in match management as well as offensive efficiency.

The Maize tournament is a scramble with 5 guaranteed matches, for the most part.  Placing is dependent on when the wins and losses happen and whether that puts a wrestler in a championship or consolation bracket at that point.

In the team standings, the Greenbacks fell behind Emporia in the very last weight class as Emporia has a 285 pounder and we do not.  The Greenbacks ended in 4th as a team behind Dodge City (#7 in 6A), Maize (#2 in 5A) and Emporia (#9 in 5A).

106 lb. freshman, Devon Weber, avenged an early season loss to Pavlacka of Andale, winning 7-4.  In the 2nd round, Devon ran into one of many Dodge City wrestlers who dropped a weight class, losing to a solid Anthony Mariche, 12-0 (#2 in 6A).  Devon followed up with a fall over Powell of Heights before two tough losses to Camacho of Maize, 4-0 and Demoss (#6 in 5A) in a close 9-6 decision.  Devon was close in positions and just needs to get more urgency when on bottom in order to increase his success rate in a solid season so far. Devon is 13-9 on the season and 2-3 on the day, 4th place.

106 lb. senior, Ethan Wilson went as an extra varsity wrestler and got a pin on the day for us!

113 lb. freshman, Kaiser Pelland was not quite himself in the first matchup, losing 2-0 to Matthews of Eisenhower.  Kaiser’s next matchup was against the #3 in 6A, Couy Weil who moved down to 113 and Kaiser lost that matchup by fall.  Kaiser bounced back for a two match win streak over Terrell of Heights by fall and Patton of Maize by a 5-3 decision.  Kaiser is 10-9 on the season, 2-2 on the day and 5th place. 120 lb. sophomore, Dylan Cox, began the day with falls over SanRoman of Maize South and Wetta of Andale.  The next two matches went the other way as Dylan lost by fall to Rojas of Dodge City who also moved down in weight since our dual in November, and Doud of Eisenhower who is 16-1, by fall.  In the final match, Dylan pinned teammate Zach Lamatsch.  Lamatsch earned a letter by pinning a varsity opponent from Emporia on the day.  Dylan is 11-9 on the season, 3-2 on the day, 5th place.

126 lb. sophomore, Camdon Nickelson, lost his first two matches by fall before winning two by fall over Estrada of Dodge City and Rangel of Emporia by fall.  Camdon also lost a 9-5 decision to Schulte of Heights on the day.  Camdon was 2-3 on the day.

132 lb. junior, Cody James started the day with two tough opponents, Edwards of Dodge City and Sandoval of Emporia, losing both of those matchups by fall. Cody bounced back, pinning Cook of Eisenhower and winning by a 9-2 decision over O’Reily of Maize South.  Cody is starting to put some things together and is making improvements each week.  He was 2-2 on the day, 5th place.

138 lb. freshman, Hogan Thompson started his day with a fall over Hall of Maize South.  Thompson lost his next two to Pavlacka of Andale and Soto of Dodge City by fall.  Hogan bounced right back and pinned Renner of Eisenhower before dropping his last match to Ledesma of Maize.  Hogan fared well in his 2nd look at varsity action and went 2-3 on the day, 4th place.

145 lb. junior, Kadence Riner began his day slowly with a major decision win over Marquez of Dodge City.  Kadence followed up with falls over Engelbrecht of Andale and Garate of Emporia.  Riner added a decision over Mora of Liberal 5-2.  In the final match, Kadence was caught in an uncharacteristically bad position, getting pinned by Gilkey of Heights. Kadence is having a great year, but will need to level up in the next few weeks in order to meet goals for Regionals and State. Kadence is 18-2 on the season and 4-1 on the day, 2nd place.

152 lb. sophomore, Derek Roadhouse began the day with a pin over Aouad of Andale.  The next two matchups were rough, facing Villalpando (#2 in 5A) and Williams (#6 in 5A), losing both by falls.  Derek bounced back with another fall over Brewer of Eisenhower, setting up his 3rd place match with Weston Moon of Dodge City, losing a close one, 7-6, putting him one match under .500 on the year.  Derek looked good overall, but will need to get more active and up his conditioning level to get where he needs to be before Hays in 2 weeks.  Derek was 2-3 on the day, 4th place.

160 lb. junior, Jadon Koehler, began his day with a win by fall over Casement of Maize.  He followed that up with a win over Wheeler of Eisenhower (#5 in 5A)who Jadon had lost to twice this season.  Jadon wrestled well, winning over Wheeler, 6-4.  Jadon would get no breaks as his next matchup was against (#4 in 5A), Delgado of Emporia.  Jadon lost a close decision, 8-4. Jadon would follow that up with another win against formerly ranked, Courtez Orange of Heights, winning 8-4. In the final round, Jadon received a forfeit over Jashon Taylor of Dodge City who we had not wrestled as he was at 170 in our dual in November.  Jadon had another good day and is making good progress, but we have some more progress to make in order to get on the podium at State.  Jadon is 15-6 on the year, 4-1 on the day, 2nd place.

182 lb. senior Justin Lamatsch began his day with a win by fall over Pipenger of Dodge City.  In round 2, Justin faced the undefeated Haas of Maize(#3 in 5A), losing by fall.  Justin followed that up with his first back-to-back losses of the season, losing to Monarrez of Liberal, 10-4.  In the 3rd place match, Justin won by fall over Baker of Emporia.  Justin had a tough bracket, coming out with 3rd place and ready for the next test in Clearwater next week.  Justin is 15-5 on the year and 2-2 on the day, 3rd place.

195 lb. sophomore, Hunter Huber, won his first three matches of the day with a 10-4 decision over Radar of Eisenhower, a fall over Oller of Maize and a decision of 3-2 over Cox of Maize South!  In his fourth match of the day, Hunter saw Ansony Quezada(#1 in 6A) and he lost in a 2nd period fall.  In the 3rd place match, Hunter was pitted against Winter of Andale.  Hunter lost by fall to Winter.  Hunter has a lot of potential to see another level, but he will need to open up on his feet to get to where his best performances will be, and he will get there in due time.  Hunter had a good day and is 14-8 on the year, 3-2 on the day, 4th place.

220 lb. junior, Sevren Hance began his day with a 6-1 decision over Davis of Heights.  Sev lost his next two against Ulteres of Emporia and Quiggle(#3 in  5A) of Maize by fall. Sevren came back with a fall over Hunter Aaron of Maize and a 5-0 decision over Terrell of Dodge City, earning a 5th place finish.  Sevren is consistently staying over .500 and wrestling well against kids that sometimes look unbeatable, but Sev has learned to not be intimidated by looks as he chops down a lot of these giants without flinching.  Sevren is 13-8 on the year, 3-2 on the day, 5th place.

The Greenbacks fared well on the day and are looking forward to our first targeted marker of progress in Clearwater on Saturday.  With hopefully two of our starters returning in Clearwater, the Greenbacks look to see where we stand for Regionals and looking forward.

Go Greenbacks!
