Failure to yield causes fatality near Sylvia

A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 50 near Sylvia in Reno county and claimed the life of 61-year-old Marilyn Brooks of Sylvia.

The accident, that was reported at 1:11 p.m. on April 29, took place when Brooks was northbound on Thompson Ave. in a 1996 Saturn and she failed to yield at the U.S. Highway 50 intersection. Eastbound driver of a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Brian Nisly, 49,  was hit by  Brooks when she failed to yield and the Saturn hit the Dodge on the right front as it crossed U.S. 50, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol online crash log.

Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene. Nisly and his passenger, 39-year-old Andrew Wiens of Hutchinson, were not injured in the accident.

Wiens was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident but Brooks and Nisly were not.
