Serving vs. Pleasing
January 10, 2020: SOAP #3690: Genesis 25-26; Psalm 6; Luke 10
Scripture: Luke (NIV) 10:38 As Jesus and his discipleswere on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened herhome to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feetlistening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparationsthat had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don't you care thatmy sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upsetabout many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what isbetter, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Observation: Somany special thoughts to consider in today's Bible reading, yet my heart isdrawn back to one I wrote in 2010 and repeated in January 2019.
'There was so much to do, and Martha needed more help. Her sister Mary should be helping, but wherewas she? Mary was with the honoredguest, just listening! In Martha's mind,Mary was doing nothing-but to Jesus what Mary was doing was the mostimportant. Martha was doing something FORJesus ('making preparations'); Mary was doing something TO Jesus(listening). Martha was serving, butMary was pleasing.'
Application: I mustremember that the first commandment is to Love the Lord with all my heart, mindand soul. The second is to love thosearound me. The disciples were those whospent time WITH Jesus before He sent them out to represent Him.
Going FOR Jesus comes after spending time WITH Jesus! During the time I spend WITH Jesus I learnwhat He desires when I go FOR Him.
Prayer: Lord, remindme that you are seeking worshippers. Timespent just listening to you should not be considered wasted. Amen
Making friends for time and eternity!
