Obituary: Marie Ann Mantooth

Sterling--Marie Ann Mantooth passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at the age of 91.  She was born on June 2, 1928, in Los Angeles, California, the only child of George (Judd) and Alma Geron Nichols.  When she was two the family moved back to their hometown of Zenda, Kansas.  For many years they ran the Zenda Café, until the food rationing during WWII made it difficult to get the supplies they needed and it was closed.

Marie Ann graduated from Zenda High School in 1946, and attended Emporia State (Kansas State Teachers College) during the summers and for the next four years was a teacher in the rural and town schools in Zenda. She married her high school sweetheart, David (Dean) Mantooth on June 5, 1950, at the St. John Catholic Church in Zenda.  They moved to Cunningham, Kansas where Marie Ann was a homemaker and also a reporter for the Cunningham Clipper (Courier) newspaper.

Dean and Marie Ann moved to Sylvia, Kansas, in 1977.  She retired in 1993 after 12 years with the Sylvia State Bank and Citizens Bank.  In 2005 Dean and Marie Ann moved to Hutchinson.  Following Dean’s death in 2012, Marie became a resident of Sterling Village in Sterling, KS.

Dean and Marie Ann loved to dance to the “Big Bands” and could be found at every athletic and music event in which their children and grandchildren took part. They were big fans of anything related to the KU Jayhawks.  Marie Ann loved to cook and enjoyed making every holiday special for her family. (those Christmas cookies!)  She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dean.  She is survived by her children:  Brad Mantooth and Cheri Dohrmann (Lowell) of Medicine Lodge; Brooks Mantooth of Hutchinson; and Cindy Anthony (Kent) of Sterling.  Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren are Kristen (Adrian) Howie (Kinley, Kamdyn, and Krosby) of Hugoton; Janie (Cole) Brokenicky (Ava and Ethan ) of St. George; Holly (Chad) Baalman (Blakely, Daxton, and Crew) of Liberal; Jay (Dakota) Dohrmann (Kroy); Julie (Brandon) Warner (Kaylee, Brooklyn, Landry, and Charlie Jo); Judd (Brianne) Dohrmann (Jax and Jett); and Joe (Danielle) Dohrmann (Whitten) all of Medicine Lodge.

Visitation with family present will be Sunday afternoon, February 2, from 1:00 to 3:00 at Livingston Mortuary, Kingman. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cunningham, with Father Patrick Kotrba officiating. (Rosary at 9:30 a.m.) Burial will be at the Maud Cemetery south of Cunningham. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Cunningham (KS) Museum or Sterling Village, in care of Livingston Mortuary, Kingman.
