Obituary: Gale Carroll


Pratt ~ Gale Carroll, 98, passed away April 13, 2020, at The Gardens at Barry Road, Kansas City, MO.  He was born January 15, 1922 at Wakefield, KS to Noah and Vera (Sheppeard) Carroll.

Gale married Mary Damm on November 24, 1941 in Belleville, KS.  They were married 78 years.    Mary preceded Gale in death on January 24, 2020.

Gale and Mary lived in Pratt from December 1941 to May 1948. They moved back to Pratt in August 1959 and lived here until they moved to the Kansas City area in October 2018.  They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Pratt.

Gale retired after 24 years as Park Superintendent for the City of Pratt.  Gale was in the US Army European Theater during WWII as a Sgt in the 458th Ordinance and drove a tank retriever in Normandy, Northern France, Belgium, and Rhineland.  After the service he joined his father and brothers in N C Carroll and Sons Gravel Company which supplied gravel for the Pratt Airbase and Hi-way 61 to Hutchinson from the sand and gravel pit south of Pratt.  He also farmed in Kansas, ranched in Texas, and operated a dozer service and farmed in Mississippi.

Gale is preceded in death by his ­parents and his wife Mary; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; 1 son and his wife, Raymond (Frances) Carroll; 2 grandchildren, Jonathan Jorns (infant), and Marie Jorns Cotter; and ­1 step-grandchild, Shannon Jorns.

Survivors include his son Roy (Rita) Carroll, Leavenworth, KS; daughters Sue (John Paul) Jorns, Pratt, KS; Cindy (Dennis) Owca, Highland, MD; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild; and 2 step-great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place.  A joint memorial service for Gale and Mary is pending.  Memorials or donations may be made to the PRMC Auxiliary or the First United Methodist Church in Pratt in care of Larrison Mortuary.  Online condolences may be made at
