Payton Woody took first place in the wrestling team's final competition before regionals Feb. 15 in Larned.

At Larned on Saturday, Feb. 1, the Pratt High School girl wrestlers defeated the #4 ranked team in the state in their preparation for regionals.

“Our girls continue to make strides against tough competition,” said head coach Tate Thompson.

Greenback placers were Payton Woody 1st, Livia Swift 1st, Jadyn Thompson 2nd, Lilly Herrman 6th, Auriella McBee 6th, and Kena Sterling 7th.

Swift and Thompson are both 3rd in the state, and new rankings will come out on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Thompson was close to a first place win after defeating the #2 ranked girl in the state, but fell to the #1 ranked.

Heading into regionals, Coach Thompson said they are focused on mindset and shoring up skills they already possess.

“We go into regionals with a positive mindset and most of the toughest girls in the state in our regional,” Thompson said. “Just like our boys, they have already seen the best in the state, several times, so they should be ready. We just have to go out and execute our skill sets and win the positions we drill every day and fight until the last whistle.”

The Pratt girl wrestlers will compete at regionals in McPherson on Saturday, Feb. 15.
