This weekend brings a lot of opportunity for high school sports in the Pratt area.

For starters, Friday night is a big night in football, with both Skyline’s and Pratt High’s playoff hopes on the line. Obviously, both schools have their work cut out for them - especially Skyline - but if either local team wins, they’re putting themselves in a good position to advance to the playoffs. Lose, and they’ll be playing for pride in week nine.

It’s also a big weekend for high school volleyball, with both the Greenbacks and Thunderbirds with a chance to make it through the sub-state tournaments and on to state.

Again, it’s likely that the T-Birds have the tougher road, with No. 2 Kiowa County a big obstacle for Skyline. However, the Lady T-Birds are still fuming after getting thoroughly beaten earlier in the season by the Mavericks, and will no doubt have revenge on their mind.

For the Lady Greenbacks, the Nickerson sub-state is a welcome relief after last year’s road block at the Cheney regional. Pratt is the top seed in the Nickerson regional, and will get a first round bye, meaning a berth in the championship is likely, with a second-round matchup against the winner of Kingman (14-22) and Hugoton (8-22) waiting after the bye. That means beating Nickerson is the only tough obstacle between the Greenbacks and state, and I’ve watched them beat the Panthers at least twice this season.

Finally, that leaves cross-country. Both local girls’ teams have a shot to advance, but even if they don’t, will send multiple individuals to the state meet in Wamego. The move from 1A to 2A puts the pressure on Skyline, with four good teams vying for three team spots.
