The Pratt County Fair doesn’t officially start until next Wednesday, but dozens of 4-H’ers and their families had a full day of activities on Friday, with the fashion revue, the traditional kick-off to several days of pre-fair events. Several of the 4-H competitions are moved ahead of the actual fair to accommodate conference-style judging, where the youngsters explain their projects to judges and receive helpful comments.

A public fashion revue was held Friday evening at Pratt Community College Carpenter Auditorium. Displaced from their usual venue when a wedding was scheduled at the Pratt Area 4-H Center before fair dates were finalized, the revue was first moved to Liberty Middle School. Summer maintenance that shut off air conditioners necessitated another move, and Extension Agent Jodi Drake described a process of “going with the flow.”

The youngsters showed off garments they had purchased in the popular buymanship project. It’s not just a shopping trip, Drake emphasized; the kids have to be able to talk to the judge about caring for their clothing — yes, they need to know how to do laundry. Good value for money spent also counts in their favor.

The sewing project continues to grow in enrollment, Drake said, through the efforts of countywide leader Sue Buhler, who has been able to purchase sewing machines for the 4-H’ers to use with a grant from the South Central Community Foundation.
