Lela M. Bettes, 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at Trinity Manor, Dodge City.

She was born July 12, 1921 at Harrisburg, Ill., the daughter of John S. and Lela Mabel Steagall Hawkins. She attended school in Nowata, Okla., and was a longtime resident of Burdett, Kan. She was a homemaker, waitress and operated Mabels Café in Burdett for several years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Burdett.

On June 11, 1940 she married Wilbur Bettes at Nowata. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2000.

Survivors include: four sons, John “Alvin” Bettes and wife Linda, Salina, James Bettes and Kenneth Bettes and wife Rebecca, all of Pratt and Donald Bettes and wife Debbie, Great Bend; two daughters, Mary Thompson and husband John, Dodge City and Nancy Garland and husband Robert, Ukiha, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Rose Mary Bettes, Salina; two brothers, Charles Hawkins, Nowata and Bill Hawkins, Joplin, Mo.; three sisters, Mary Hawkins and Ruth Devin both of Tulsa, Okla., and Sarah Thomason, Canyon Lake, Calif.; 29 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Clyde Bettes; a daughter, Peggy Summers; a brother, Robert Hawkins; two sisters, Mildred Hawkins and Joan Mejia; a daughter-in-law, Ella Mae Bettes, three grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the United Methodist Church, Burdett, with Pastor Bradley McCoy officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Burial will be in Browns Grove Cemetery, Burdett.
