  • #8 Cougars handle T-Birds

  • The good news is, the Skyline Thunderbirds played right with the #8 ranked Otis-Bison Cougars in two of Friday night's quarters, numbers 1 and 4.
The bad news is, quarters 2 and 3 also count toward the final score, which was 58-20 in favor of O-B.

Otis scored first, but Skyline answered on a 5 yd. Blake Lee to Sam Howell pass. The score was only 8-6 Cougars at the end of the first stanza and the T-Birds may have felt like they could do this.
But in the second quarter, things got away from the Skyliners. Otis-Bison drew first blood in the second stanza to go up 14-6.
But on their next two drives, the Thunderbirds coughed up the ball via an interception and a fumble. O-B would make them pay.
Dylan Wissman, the Cougars excellent running back, scored on long runs immediately following each of the Skyline turnovers.
With O-B putting up 20 unanswered points in the second quarter, SKyline watched their 2 point deficit at the end of the 1st quarter balloon to a 28-6 deficit late in the first half.
Skyline put together a nice drive that could have gotten them back in the ball game late in the second quarter, but time expired before they could push it into the endzone.
The 3rd quarter was another large dose of Wissman. After sniffing out a Skyline fake punt attempt on their initial possession of the 3rd quarter, O-B set about tossing 30 unanswered points on the board.
Wissman scored three of the TDs and QB Kole Urban chipped i n one of his own as the Cougars expanded their lead to 58-6.
At that point, the running clock was engaged and reserves for both sides got some playing time.
The 4th quarter belonged to the T-Birds. Dustin Weber ran in a touchdown for Skyline to narrow the gap to 58-12. Later, Chanler Simar would scoop up a Cougar fumble and return it for another T-Bird score.
When time ran out on the running clock, the Cougars had prevailed 58-20.
Skyline head coach Jon Novotny was a little more encouraged after this game, even though his team had dropped to 0-4.
"Our effort was better this week," he mentioned, "and our execution is improving."
"We still have some letdowns that cost us bigtime, we have to be more consistent," Novotny said.
The T-Birds will try to break into the win column at home vs. Fairfield next week.
