The Pratt High School Greenbacks football team extended their record to 3-1 on the season with a convincing 40-12 win over the Lyons Lions at Zerger Field Friday night.
The tone was set early on, as on the Lions’ initial offensive series, Cesar Regalado picked off a Lyons pass attempt and gave the Frogs good field position.
The Pratt offense responded, moving the ball until a 5 yd. Skylar Dean to Mitchell Baird pass pushed across the Greenback’s first, but certainly not last, score. 7-0 Pratt.
Lyons maintained possession of the ball for much of the rest of the first quarter, but the Pratt D didn’t yield any points to the visitors at this point.
Leading 13-0 in the middle of the 2nd quarter, Pratt looked to be in a bit of trouble as a poor punt gave the Lions the ball at the Pratt 33.
But the Greenbacks rose to the occasion and actually pushed Lions back to the 42 before regaining possession.
It became the Anthony Cannata show at that point, as on the ensuing drive he ran for big chunks of yardage, taking Pratt to a first and goal. Appropriately, a Dean to Cannata 10 yd. TD pass play with a minute left in the half improved the score to 21-0, after a 2 pt. conversion.
The Greenbacks had another good offensive series after fielding the second half kickoff. Dean runs, Cannata runs, and Dean to Shawn Ramos passes moved the ball to within striking distance. On a 3rd and 5 at the 10 yd. line, Skylar Dean skipped into the endzone to put Pratt up 27-0.
Drew Dobbs thwarted Lyons next offensive series with an interception.
Pratt capitalized quickly on the turnover, a Dean to Ryan Landry TD pass extending the Pratt lead to 33-0.
With time running out in the third stanza, the Lions broke into the scoring column off a halfback pass. After a missed conversion it was 33-6 Pratt heading into the final period.
Each team scored once in the final quarter, another Dean to Landry connection for Pratt and then a facesaver by Lyons with 1:30 left in the game. Final score 40-12 Pratt.
Pratt head coach Forrest Mazey is pleased with the way his team is progressing.
“We need to shore up some things on third downs, but overall our defense played really well,” Mazey said.
“Our offense executed better tonight,” he continued. “Most importantly, we got the W.” Look for complete stats online next week.
Next Friday the Greenbacks travel to Halstead in another CKL match-up.
