Skyline students will be attending a national high school journalism convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Journalism teacher Judy Hampel and six of her students will further their knowledge at this fall convention. The National Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association sponsors the event. With nearly 400 practical and professional learning sessions, plenty of learning opportunities are available.

The convention takes place Nov. 15 through the 18. It will be held at the Marriott Rivercenter and Riverwalk and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Skyline's journalists will travel by bus with Wichita students. After the bus departs from Lawrence-Dumont Stadium at 7 a.m. on Nov. 14, it will make two stops to eat. At one stop, students will have the chance to tour the Oklahoma City National Memorial. The bus is scheduled to arrive in San Antonio around 10 p.m.

Pre-convention workshops begin on Nov. 15. Photography students, Benaja Schlingensiepen and Taryn Lange will be attending the DSLR Basics half-day session. This workshop will improve the photographers' knowledge about their cameras and composition techniques. Tony Marquez, Jenessa Corbet, Patty Ibarra and Katelyn Kumberg will be attending media tours which will allow participants the chance to tour the facilities of San Antonio media outlets.

During the rest of the time at the convention, students will listen to keynote speakers and participate in breakout sessions of their choice. On Friday evening, Skyline students will participate in the Team Scavenger Hunt Photo Contest. To get points, they will use a digital camera to take photographs in downtown San Antonio.

In scheduled breaks for the convention, students will enjoy some sightseeing in San Antonio. They will tour the Alamo and take in the sights at the Riverwalk and the El Mercado outdoor market.

To pay for the trip, the students recently sold first aid kits and sports pictures.

The journalism students would like to thank everyone who purchased first aid kits or sports pictures that made this event possible.

Katelyn Kumberg is a senior at Skyline School
