Dwight Ellis, 95, went to his heavenly home, Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. He was born May 26, 1917 in Haviland, the son of Birde and Edna (Moore) Ellis. He attended Byers schools, graduating in 1936; he then attended Salt City Business School in Hutchinson and graduated with honors.
He was a member of the Pleasant Plain Friends Church.
He went to work for Cessna Aircraft and married his grade school friend and later high school sweetheart, Rowena Gereke on Oct. 12, 1940. She passed away Oct. 16, 1992.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Massachusetts battleship, as a Fireman 1st Class, a Petty Officer, and a Machinist during World War II. He received many medals for his bravery as well as an honorable discharge.
After returning from war, he went back to Cessna until 1948 when Rowena and he decided to move back to the farm and he began farming with his father. He farmed until he was 93 years old, which was the love of his life.
He is survived by daughter Regena and son-in-law Tom Penka, Pratt; a granddaughter, Dr. Rachelle Penka and husband Sean McGillicuddy, Spartanburg, S.C.; and a great-grandson, Jack McGillicuddy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean Ellis.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28, at Larrison Mortuary 300 Country Club Rd., Pratt.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, with military honors provided by the US Navy Honor Guard.
