The #8 ranked Greenback Wrestling Team went into Regionals with a goal of wrestling at the top of their game and that is exactly what they did. Each wrestler brought it all together and wrestled at a very high level.
The Greenbacks brought 9 wrestlers to Regionals and will be taking 5 wrestlers to State and plan on continuing to bring it at the highest level, match by match. PHS’s state qualifiers include:
106 Trae’ Foreman, jr., 2-1, Regional Runner-Up. Trae’ followed up his bye in the 1st round with a fall over Andale’s Sam Lubbers, putting him in the semifinals against El Dorado’s Jake Leckliter. Trae’ led the entire match and was in control and ready for a championship match against the #1 All-Class wrestler, Jake Goldenstein of Augusta. Trae’ had wrestled Jake twice earlier in the season as the Greenbacks’ season is set up to prep the team for these types of situations. In his 7th championship match of the season, Trae looked more than ready. The match was exciting up until the very end. Trae’ was not able to score until the third period when he put Goldenstein on his back, which has not happened in a very long time to the very talented, Augusta wrestler. Trae’ battled to try and score again up until the final whistle, making his Greenback wrestling family very proud in a 2-7 defeat. Trae is ready to take it one match at a time and achieve his goals at State. Trae’ is currently ranked #4 in 4A. Season Record: 28-4.
113 Cesar Regalado, jr., 4-0, Regional Champion. Cesar pinned his first three opponents, entering the finals on a roll. Cesar continued his high-level of wrestling in his finals match, defeating Reno Hughey of El Dorado 13-5 for a major decision win. Cesar is primed and ready to go this weekend where he will be achieving his goals one match at a time. Cesar is looking very sharp in all aspects currently, but there are some little things that will need to be tightened up before the State Tournament on Friday. Cesar is currently ranked #1 in 4A. Season Record: 27-3.
152 Mitchell Baird, sr., 3-1, 3rd. Mitchell started his day with a bye, setting up a critical match with Augusta’s Colton Clayborn. Mitchell handled this very tough wrestler with a 17-5 major decision, which set up Mitchell’s semifinals match with the #2 All-Class wrestler, Jake Gehring of Buhler. Mitchell lost by a fall, putting him in the consolation semifinals, where it is win and you are in the State Tournament. Mitchell made quick work of Jon Graham of Rose Hill with a :44 pin to guarantee his spot at State. Mitchell’s 3rd place match was a rematch of the quarterfinal against Clayborn of Augusta. Mitchell once again left no doubt with a 15-0 technical fall over Clayborn to put an exclamation point on his day with an outstanding win against a seasoned wrestler that has 30 wins on the season. Mitchell is wrestling very well and is firing on all cylinders. Season Record: 26-10.
Page 2 of 2 - 170 Weston Riner, sr., 2-2, 4th. As one of two second year guys, Trae’ being the other one, Weston has made huge strides to get where he is today. Weston is one of the toughest wrestlers in the State and he improves on a daily basis. Weston received a bye, which put him into the quarterfinals against Logan Lindbloom of Buhler who Weston had lost to twice before by fall. Weston wrestled like a Greenback should, tough and disciplined. Weston recorded a hard earned 5-4 victory. In the semifinal, Weston met the #3 in 4A, Kolby Fennewald, who won by fall over Weston and went on to win the championship over the #2 in 4A from Clearwater. Weston was then placed in the consolation semifinal round where he left no doubt that he belongs in the State Tournament with a pin over Circle’s Ridge Walker. Weston’s consolation finals match was against Augusta’s Jacob Hill. Weston lost by fall, earning a 4th place medal and a trip to State. Weston had the Greenback swelled with pride as his performance gets us another week with Weston and he will continue to surprise other people, but Greenback Nation knows Weston is exactly where he belongs and he is ready for more. Season Record: 20-13.
220 Austin Gates, sr., 3-0, Regional Champion. Austin received a bye the 1st round, followed by a :29 pin over Rahe of Mulvane. In the semifinal, Austin met up with the # 6 ranked 4A wrestler, Marcus Walker of El Dorado. Austin won a hard fought 9-1 major decision to earn his shot at a Regional Championship. In the final, Austin met Otto Orosco of Ulysses. Austin looked very sharp in a 1st period pin to end our day with a bang. Gates is wrestling well and listening well right now. If he continues on that path, he will be in a good place come Saturday. Austin is ranked #4 in 4A. Season Record: 28-8.
Other Greenbacks wrestled hard but failed to qualify for next week.
