Even though the Macksville Lady Mustangs led all the way in the first half, that just wasn't enough, as the La Crosse Lady Leopards came back, built up a 25-32 third quarter lead and held off a late Macksville rally to give the Lady Stangs a heart-breaking 45-47 loss in St. John's Sub-State Wednesday night.
The game started out slow, with the Lady Mustangs taking an 8-6 first quarter lead and building it up to five points (15-10) midway through the second quarter. But that didn't last for long as the Leopards staged a short rally in the final minutes of the half, the Lady Stangs taking a 17-16 lead going into the locker room.
A combination of Macksville turnovers and La Crosse 3-pointers in the third quarter gave La Crosse the advantage going into the final quarter, leading the Stangs 25-32.
Macksville out-scored the Leopards 20-15 in the fourth quarter - but still short by two points 45-47. With 3.2 seconds left on the clock, Macksville's head coach Nathanael Norman called a full time-out. The Stangs worked the ball inside going for the lay-up in heavy traffic when the buzzer sounded, the ball missing the mark, giving the Leopards a first round win and advancing them on to play the St. John Lady Tigers on Thursday night.
Scoring for Macksville: Mindy Wood 17, Selena Galan 14, Tara Bunker 6, Karissa Langlois 4, Kristina Murphy 2, Kiley Freeman 2.
Free throws: 8-12 for 67 percent - Galan 3, Wood 3, Bunker 2.
Three point goals: 1 (Galan).
In other action, the La Crosse Leopard men defeated the Kinsley Coyotes 59-27 - the win moving the Coyotes into the second round on Friday, playing the St. John Tigers.
