Pratt City commissioners moved the Sandy Creek housing development in the Maple Street addition another step along the road Monday by approving a zoning change.

The biggest portion of the property was rezoned as residential (R-1) and platted as 48 lots. A smaller portion along K-61, deemed less desirable for home-building, was rezoned as a C-S Highway Service District, which includes "almost everything except industrial" according to comments made by city inspector Brad Blankenship to the planning and zoning commission.

The next step, Public Works Director Russ Rambat said, is for the EBH engineering firm to develop bid specifications to move ahead with development. "It's in the process," Blankenship said, noting that EBH was also busy with other city projects.

"Weekly I get people looking for lots to build $250,000 houses," Mayor Bill Hlavachick said, recommending the project be started as soon as possible.

Commissioner Luke Kumberg suggested that if EBH did not have time, the city should find someone else to do the work.

Commissioners approved the purchase of a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe from Doug Reh Chevrolet for $28,985, higher than Lanterman Motors' bid for a Ford Explorer by $125. The sport utility vehicle was requested by Police Chief Gary Myers for a patrol vehicle.

At least one officer on each shift has received specialized training in crime scene investigation, which requires that a lot of equipment be carried in the vehicle. The larger vehicle was also requested by officers who spend 12 hours in them.

"Police officers are getting larger — not fat, but larger," Myers commented.

Rambat reported that First Street repairs just east of the U.S. 54/281 junction will squeeze traffic to one westbound lane from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Crews will also be removing brick on North Main to repair a water leak.

Pool repairs are going well, and the contractor is "upbeat" about its condition, Rambat said.
