  • In a ten-school tournament at Larned on Tuesday that was shortened to 9 holes due to inclement weather, the Greenback linksters carded a very respectable second place as a team.
Larned (161) won the meet on their home course, followed by Pratt and Ellinwood both with 177. The tie was broken in favor of PHS by virtue of the relative placing of the teams’ 5th men. Alec Hampton (50) beat Ellinwood’s 5th man (54) to give Pratt second place as a team.
Navarre Strapp carded a 41 to lead the Greenbacks, tying for fifth but placing 6th on the card tiebreaker. “We have been waiting for Navarre to post a round closer to his ability,” head golf coach Andy Kisner said, “and yesterday he did it.”
Skylar Stalcup (44) was in a 6-way tie for 10th place. Tyler Skaggs was a stroke behind at 45 and placed 17th. Spencer Sullivan (47, 24th) rounded out the Greenback scorers. Zach Will was the Frogs’ 6th man, finishing 46th with a 57.
“We had four players in the 40s, which is a step in the right direction,” Coach Kisner commented. “Our win at Medicine Lodge and this finish have given us some confidence moving into the middle of our season.”
“We just need some better weather and some practice time to sharpen up,” Kisner added. “Our 177 would convert to a 354 18-hole score, which is still at least 20 strokes off the minimum score we will need at regionals.”
The Greenback golfers will have some time to work on a few things before traveling to Russell Thursday April 25.
