  • The Skyline track teams competed in the Bucklin Invitational Friday. The girls took 2nd place in the 19-school event with 56.5 points while the boys were 18th with 10. Kiowa County won both divisions with 106 points for their girls and 74.5 for their boys.
Roman Ibarra continued to score well in distances for the Thunderbirds. He took 3rd in the mile (4:48) and 4th in the 2-mile (10:38.) “Roman ran personal bests in both the 1600 and 3200,” reported Skyline head coach Summer Younie. Ibarra was the only T-Bird boy to score in the huge meet.
The girls fared somewhat better, the usual suspects again finishing high in their events. The sprint duo of Morgan Flowers and Jessica DeWeese each got a gold medal, Flowers in the 100m (12.73) and DeWeese in the 200m (26.9). DeWeese was 2nd to Flowers again in the 100m (12.94). Betsy Giles and Ashley Koirth joined those two to get the silver in the 4x100 (52.26).
The 4x400 also placed, taking the bronze (4:25). That was Giles, DeWeese, Flowers and Brooke Fisher. “Our girls 4x1 and 4x4 ran very well,” Younie said. “We took another 8 seconds off our 4x400 time.”
Brooke Fisher also placed in both distance races, 4th in the 1600m (5:50) and 2nd in the 3200m (12:32). Those were both season best times for Fisher.
In field events, Taylor DeWeese got 5th in high jump (4-6) and Ashley Koirth rounded out Skyline girls scoring with a 6th (31-7) in shot put.
Although not placing, Abby Giles cut a second off her 300mIH time. “For as cold as it was, at least the wind wasn’t blowing,” mentioned Younie. “The kids did a good job competing.” The Skyline thinclads will travel to Pretty Prairie for the HOPL meet on Thursday.
