  • The Pratt Gators 12 and under baseball team represented their community well at the Hap Dumont State Tournament held at Green Sports Complex over the weekend.
19 teams converged on Pratt to contest the Hap Dumont state championship. The Pratt Gators, the local entry, went 2-2 on the weekend— making it to the bracket quarterfinals before being eliminated, which put them in the top eight Hap Dumont teams in the State of Kansas.
In pool play, the Gators went 1-1, losing to Wichita Cubs 15-5 and downing Mulvane Wildcats 14-2.
In bracket play, the Gators dropped Wichita Heaters 11-7 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Gators were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Manhattan Titans by a 20-5 count. The Titans went on to eventually claim the tournament runners-up trophy.
The tournament semi-finals were interrupted by Sunday afternoon’s rainstorm. Wichita Cardinals has already advanced to the finals, but Manhattan Titans had to wait for the weather to pass before they could complete their semifinal game.
Pratt recreation director Bruce Pinkall’s crew did a nice job after the one-third-inch rain left the Green Complex fields puddled up. As it was a state tournament, and some of the players and their supporters had been in town since Friday, it wasn’t really an option to postpone the tourney to another day. Elbow grease, a vacuum pump and a truckful of Diamond Dry were employed and the workers soon had the infield and pitcher’s mound ready for play—and the tournament continued.
Wichita Cardinals ended up downing Manhattan Titans in the finals to claim the championship trophy. Wichita Reds took the 3rd place game.
