  • Tom Franklin Hargis, 85, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at South Wind Hospice.
    He was born on March 5, 1928 in Texarkana, Texas, to Calvin H. and Emilie B. (Waller) Hargis. On April 4, 1952, Tom married Viola Stout at Newkirk, Okla. Their three children, Ivan, Susan and David, were born over the next several years. The family spent many years traveling from one job site to the next as he built grain elevators, and worked in oilfield and construction. The family settled in Colorado when the children started school, and Tom worked building custom homes and condominiums in Vale and Aspen, and multi-family apartment buildings in the Denver area.
    Moving back to Kansas in 1968, Tom worked as a farmer, mechanic, carpenter, heavy equipment operator, and oilfield worker.
    Survivors include two brothers, Calvin Hargis, Niles, Mich., and Ted Hargis, Hutchinson; a sister Betty Kittle, Pueblo, Colo.; sons, Ivan (Julie) Hargis, Haysville, and David Hargis, Anthony; daughter, Susan (Natividad) Ibarra, Pratt; grandchildren, Emile (Juan) Garcia, Salina, Steven Ibarra, Hutchinson, Ruben Ibarra, Pratt, Lacy (Kenneth) Niblett, Preston, Cole Hargis, Hiawatha, Kayla Hargis, Topeka and Jeremy (Jackie) Hargis, Anthony; great-grandchildren, Samantha Ibarra, Alyssa Ibarra, Cruz Ibarra, Cheyenne Ibarra, Dylan Ibarra, Elena Garcia, Jimmena Garcia, Ninel Garcia, Vizente Garcia, Jerica Hargis, Jillian Hargis, Jonathan Hargis and Justin Hargis.
    Tom was in preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola Hargis; sisters, Eula Hargis, Sophia Yeager, Bertha Gossman, and Eva Jones; and brother, Harold Hargis.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 718 S. New, Pratt.
    Memorials may be made to the World Wide Work in care of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
