Cole Fincham and Taylor DeWeese are the 2014 recipients of the Jason Befort Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Each will receive $500 for the 2014-2015 academic year.
Fincham, son of Mark and Lisa Fincham, was active in math club, golf and senior class president. He will attend Kansas State University majoring in mechanical engineering with a career goal of owning an automotive performance company.
DeWeese, daughter of Jerry and Anita DeWeese, participated in 4-H, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was on the track and field team. She will also attend KSU majoring in family studies and agriculture communications with a career goal of becoming a county extension agent.
Family and friends started the Jason Befort Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor his memory and continue his goal of helping others achieve and succeed.
Befort was born Oct. 31, 1974 and grew up in Pratt graduating from PHS in 1993. He got a degree in secondary education from Kansas State University and taught and coached in Augusta.
He believed anything could be accomplished with dedication and determination. His life was an example of this philosophy and he encouraged others by his example. He believed in education and was pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration at the time of his tragic death.
The Befort Scholarship is awarded through the South Central Community Foundation. Scholarship eligibility requirements: must be a senior at Mulvane High School, Pratt High School or Skyline High School; planning to attend a community college, four year college or four year university in Kansas; have at least a 3.3 GPA or SAT/ACT Score of at least 21; no financial need is required.
