December 19, 2017: SOAP #2938:  John 5-6

Scripture:  John (NV) 6:5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”   6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
6: 12   When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Observation:   5,000 hungry men, 8 month's wages, 5 loaves, 2 small fish.   Those are the numbers.   No wonder Andrew said, 'how far will they go among so many?'   Add in 1 Jesus: now 5,000 men had enough to eat AND 12 baskets full of leftovers.

Application:   More than once I have said, 'How far will that go among so many?'   Be it bills, or food, or time, or talents, or strength, or energy.     I must change my focus from the numbers to Jesus.   He too knows how to count, but He also knows how to make up the difference!     I must obey His leading in what to do with the little I have.

Prayer:    Jesus, You are the All-Sufficient One!  When I obey You, You make up what I lack!  Amen
