September 9, 2018: SOAP #3202:  Lamentations 1-2; Obadiah; Revelation 14

Scripture:  Obadiah 10 Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.
11 On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.
12 You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.
13 You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor look down on them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.

Observation:   The short book of Obadiah concerns Edom, the descendants of Esau, Jacob's brother.   Judgment will come because they did nothing.   They stood by and watched the trouble coming to Israel, Jacob's descendants.   They even took advantage of their trouble, like looters after a tornado or earthquake, they stole from the destroyed homes.

Application:   It is important to God how I treat those going through hard times.   God's people are to share their neighbor's burdens.   Verse 11 tells me that if I see people troubling my neighbor and do nothing, I have become like one of the troublers!!!

Prayer:      Holy Spirit, make me a good friend of those being troubled. Make me aware of those around me and what my part can be in helping.   Make me an instrument of your care.    Amen
