Salina to

replace Laredo

DURHAM, N.C. — The Salina Stockade will replaced the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association this season.

The Lemurs folded Wednesday amidst a legal dispute between the team’s ownership group and members of the board of directors of Laredo Baseball Holdings, which operates the city owned Uni-Trade Stadium.

The team was founded in 2003 as the Shreveport-Bossier Sports. After three seasons in the Central Baseball League, the team moved to the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The team changed its name to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in 2009.

In 2011, the team was sold and moved to Laredo.

The team won division titles in 2004, 2006 and 2010 in Shreveport, winning a league title in 2010. The team won a division titles in 2012 and a league championship in 2015 in Laredo.

The team was 57-42 last season, finishing second to Wichita in the AA South Division.

The Lemurs had an average attendance of 3,874 in its first season and 3,083 in 2013, but slipped every season since. The team averaged 893 last season, which was 11th out of 12 teams in the AA.

The Salina Stockade played in the Pecos League last season. The Pecos League also is independent from Major League baseball and its affiliates. The team was 29-36, finishing third in the PL North Division. Attendance figures are not readily available for the Pecos League.

Salina will operate mostly as a road team this season with a limited number of games at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Former Major League player Pete Incaviglia managed the Lemurs. On the AA web site, J.D. Droddy was listed as the Stockade manager. Droddy managed the Tucson Saguaros of the Pecos League last season, leading the team to a 51-14 record, a South Division title and a league playoff title.

The Stockade will replace Laredo in the AA South, along with the Wichita Wingnuts, Texas (Grand Prairie) AirHogs and the Cleburne Railroaders (formerly the Joplin Blasters).

The Central Division remains the same with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, Sioux City Explorers, Lincoln Saltdogs and Kansas City (Kan.) T-Bones. In the North Division are the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Winnipeg Goldeyes, St. Paul Saints and Sioux Falls Canaries.

Winnipeg is the defending playoff champions, stopping Wichita in five games.

Salina opens the regular season May 18 to start a four-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The first scheduled home game for the Stockade is May 22 against Winnipeg.
