The Pratt High boys golf team took first in their home Invitational on Monday; then got 4th in the CKL meet at Hesston on Tuesday
They say familiarity breeds contempt, but in golf, it can put you in a comfort zone. The latter seems to have been the case for the Pratt High School boys golf team on Monday as they won their Home Invitational at Park Hills by shooting their best team score of the season.
In the 8-school meet, the Greenbacks defended their home course with a team total 371. Cheney was runner-up with 410, then Nickerson 429 and Kingman rounded out the top four with 458.
"The kids really came together yesterday and posted our best team score of the year to finish in first place," said Steve Landry, PHS head boys golf coach."We shot a 371, beating our previous best team score of 399 this year."
In high school golf, the top four players count toward the team score. Pratt's top four players packed together like a cross-country team to deliver the victory. PHS went 3-4-5-6 in individual placings.
"We had 4 players finish in the top 6 medalists, led by David Mathes with a 92," Landry said. "He was followed by Ethan Wilson, Kael Bridges and Casey Hoeme all posting 93."
Beau Meyers also competed for the Greenbacks, but struggled through a bit of an off-day to finish 20th.
PHS scores: 3. David Mathes 46-46-92 4. Ethan Wilson 49-44-93 5. Kael Bridges 48-45-93 6. Casey Hoeme 45-48-93 20. Beau Meyers 55-59-114
"Hopefully this will give a lot of confidence heading into the League Tournament tomorrow at Hesston," Landry speculated.
Beau Meyers rebounded quickly on Tuesday from Monday's mediocre round to lead the Greenback effort at the Central Kansas League tournament in Hesston. Meyers carded a 42-45-87 to finish in the medals at #6.
David Mathes was next in 13th 47-46-93. Casey Hoeme finished in 16th 48-47-95. Will Mass rounded out the PHS scoring 36th 62-55-117.
Team scores at CKL were: 1. Hesston 330 2. Hillsboro 356 3. Hoisington 380 4. Pratt 392 5. Larned 403 6. Nickerson 429 7. Lyons 486
Next up for the PHS linksters will be regionals at Crazy Horse (formerly Highlands) hosted by Nickerson on Monday May 14.
